An Introduction to the Pearl River Delta

  • “An Introduction to the Pearl River Delta” is a outreach program inaugurated by a Graduates of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The aim of this program is to promote a greater understanding of a variety of social matters including culture within the region, environmental concerns and economic development through conversations with the locals. This program also gives students a closer look at “China’s Sustainable Development” model.

  • This program primarily targets Hong Kong’s local secondary school students, who follow the Liberal Arts and Georgraphy stream of the curriculum. This program aims to supplement their program by letting students see what they have learned in their textbooks in action, thus allowing students to gain a meaning to their pre-existing knowledge.

  • We would like to thank the schools and their associated staff and students for the support and participation in this program:

Course Information

“An Introduction to the Pearl River Delta” stands out from other programs by making private enterprises (i.e. factories) that would otherwise be closed to the public, accessible to our participants. While there, students will be able to interview factory workers and find out how labour in China is changing. Students are also exposed to the dynamic agricultural industry, gaining the opportunity to interview farmers and gain a first-hand perspective on how society in China is changing. Students will also observe the effects of China’s newfound wealth on its more rural areas, by visiting one of China’s new retirement community.
